Martinez

Martinez

The Martinez is thought by many to be the precursor to the Martini.  While its origins are unclear, the story goes that bartender and author Jerry Thomas may have invented the cocktail for a customer traveling to the port city of Martinez, California. The city of Martinez itself, however, insists that one of its own local bartenders created the drink.

Ingredients

  • 1½ oz Genever (Old-Tom Gin also works well)
  • 1½ oz sweet vermouth (we used P. Quiles Vermouth Rojo)
  • ¼ oz Luxardo maraschino liqueur
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters (or our Sumac Bitters)
  • Orange rind, for garnish (or half an apricot, which we used because it was in season)

Preparation

  1. Combine the gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and bitters into a shaker over ice and stir until well-chilled.
  2. Strain into a chilled coupe glass.  Garnish with the orange rind (or apricot).
