A modern take on an old classic. The original smash comes from the 1830s, taking its name from the muddling action of mint leaves into the drink. This version uses celery for both aromatics and garnish, playing up the oloroso with a dose of bright lemon and lean rye whiskey.
Ingredients
- 2 oz oloroso sherry
- ¾ oz rye whiskey
- ⅓ oz dry Curaçao
- 2-3 thin lemon slices
- ½ small stalk celery with its leaves, thinly sliced, plus a spare stalk for garnishing
- 2 dashes Eleven Madison Citrus & Sarsaparilla Bitters
Preparation
- Combine lemon slices and the celery with its leaves in a shaker. Muddle until well mashed and aromatic.
- Add the sherry, rye, dry Curaçao, and bitters to the shaker. Fill ⅔ full with ice and shake hard until well-chilled.
- Double strain into a rocks glass over ice. Garnish with the celery.
