The American chestnut has a long and storied history in Appalachia. Once used as currency when money was spare, chestnuts were harvested from the forests and carted to trading posts and small towns in huge sacks. They were a critical aspect of the southern Appalachian economy and diet.
More than a century ago, a chestnut blight was introduced to American chestnuts from imported Japanese chestnut trees. Lacking any preexisting immunity, the American chestnut was nearly wiped out. With it, the economic stability of Appalachia was devastated.
Efforts are being made today to restore the native chestnut, but rehabilitating the old forests is slow work. These chestnuts are a cross between the American chestnut and the Chinese chestnut, preserving the unique character of the native tree while instilling natural disease resistance.
