This 90/10 Nero d'Avola/Pignatello field blend is the only red wine produced from Salvatore Marino's 2-hectare vineyard on the southeast coast of Sicily.  Marino's vineyards are tucked between the Ionian and Mediterranean seas.  The soil in this sheltered region is predominantly ancient clay-limestone, heavy in marine fossils.  The resulting wines aren't shy in their minerality, expressing a clear tie to their oceanic soil origins.

Most of Marino's wines are over 30-year old, and he tends them with a combination of organic methods and biodynamic timing.   Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and minimal maceration yield a true-to-form vintage, both bright and intense.  Pairs beautifully with beef, lamb, aged cheeses, and very dark chocolate.

About Salvatore Marino

Wine has been made in Salvatore Marino’s family for generations. Growing up, his grandfather and father produced bulk wine in a large facility within the town of Pachino. Always a bon vivant, Marino’s love for good food begat a passion for seeking delicious bottles from Sicily and beyond. It also made him dream of starting a winery of his own. But, before branching out on his own, he felt the need to learn how to properly run a cellar. Marino had learned how to make wine with his father, later working at wineries in California, Puglia, and Sicily to further his understanding of enology. With a decade of experience behind him, Salvatore launched his own estate in 2017. Today he works 15 hectares of land divided into five sectors, all close to each other and the town of Pachino. A firm believer in polyculture, seven of the 15 hectares are planted in vines, with the rest planted in fruit trees, wheat, other cereals, table grapes and much more. Marino maintains his vineyards organically, implementing biodynamic principles as needed to enhance the quality of the harvest. To Marino, sustainability means both careful tending and small production. Quality can't be mass-produced, a philosophy that he holds at the core of his work.
