The Carignan in Villalobos' 2018 Sylvestra comes from an 80-year old organic vineyard on the family estate. Here, the vines are allowed to grow without any pruning or irrigation. The vineyard is quite biodiverse, hosting a wide variety of native flora and fauna, such as culen, maiten, quillay, hawthorn trees, and sweet briar. Villalobos cites the robust disease resistance of their vines to this unique growing environment.
On the nose, one fines wild blackberries, while the palate is defined by elegant tannin, lively acidity, and notes of cherry and strawberry.
About Villalobos
About Villalobos
Villalobos is situated in Colchagua Valley, Chile, a region long known for its expansive pastures and lowland sea-side breezes. Established in the 1940s, the vines of Villalobos have never been treated with chemicals, acclimating entirely to the demands of their climate. They grow alongside a polyculture of native trees and shrubs, the vineyard molding itself to the unique shape of the landscape. The goal of Villalobos is to move away from the traditional modes of intensive monocultures. In many of the Villalobos vineyards, the vines grow untrellised into the surrounding trees and shrubs. Some are so ancient that they tower over 18 feet above the trees.
