Uncondemned Vinho Tinto 2019
Varietal: Trincadeira, Fernão Pires
In Portugal, the ancient “backyard” vineyards north of Lisbon are condemned to be abandoned. Their owners are retiring, and the next generation has largely relocated to urban areas, seeking employment. Stricken by the loss of these small family plots, Andre, the winemaker at Quinta do Montalto, took it upon himself to preserve them. He currently has two vineyards under his care, each aged between 120 to 150 years old.
Uncondemned Tinto follows in the traditional Protuguese winemaking style of "palhete” which is a blend of red and white grapes fermented together. The style was traditionally nearly exclusive to much of Portugal, but was abandoned to compromise with global market demand. Comprised of Trincadeira and Fernão Pires, Andre's wines are minimal intervention, fermented from Organic grapes.
