A classic Calabrian rosso made from 100% Gaglioppo. Sourced entirely from a single vineyard, Scala's 2021 vintage is fermented entirely in stainless steel and aged in concrete for one year. An abundance of acid paired with mellow integration makes the 2021 vintage approachable and easy-drinking. It has an enticing nose of red fruits, orange peel, baking spices, and a deeper, cherry kirsch finish.
About Scala
About Scala
The Scala family has cared for the same vineyards for over 200 years. The domaine is currently run by Luigi Scala, who favors quality over quantity and aims to produce distinguished Calabrian wines. From the growing of the grapes to the refinement and aging of the wines, Luigi follows family traditions to best express their unique terroir. He was joined in 2008 by his son Francesco, who oversees the business side of the winery. The Cirò DOC was created in 1969. Most of their grapes are native varieties such as Greco bianco (different clone than the Greco di Tufo grape found in Campagnia), Gaglioppo, Magliocco, a tiny amount of Nerello Mascalese, Mantonico, and Greco Nero. The vines are cultivated in espalier on the hinterland plains and hills, melding into the landscape. Scala obtained their organic certification in 2016. Lupins grow beneath the vines, providing the soil with nitrogen and reducing weed competition. Everything is done with the utmost care and attention, allowing the grapes to speak for themselves.
