Lightwell Survey is a collaborative effort in creative winemaking spearheaded by Ben Jordan, the winemaker behind Early Mountain. Their work shies away from overly boisterous, heavily extracted styles often seen in internationally styled wines, favoring minimal intervention winemaking, minimal filtration, careful co-fermentation, and the mingling of both hybrid and vinifera grapes. They are known in Virginia and beyond as pioneers in a new era of expressive, craft-oriented winemaking.
Their fruit comes from a variety of sources throughout the Shenandoah Valley: Sherman Ridge and Bluestone Vidal Blanc, Bluestone Chambourcin, Oxeye Blaufränkisch, Sherman Ridge Petit Manseng, Barren Ridge Traminette. They implement 100% whole cluster fermentation on their Vidal, Blaufränkisch, and Traminette. No SO₂ is applied to the fruit, and the juice is left to macerate on the skins for twelve days. After undergoing semi-carbonic fermentation, the first three grapes are pressed combined with the Chambourcin and the Petit Manseng.
A truly creative and individualistic wine, true to Virginia terroir without following existing, tired tropes.
