Here, Lightwell brings the best of Virginia's dry cider heritage to the table and combines it with a base of hybrid Chambourcin and Vidal grapes. The resulting blend is wild and textural, with all the aromatics of a traditional grape wine and the rusticity of a old-mountain cider.
The Chamboucin was fermented whole cluster alongside direct-press Vidal. About halfway through fermentation, apples were directly-pressed overtop the grapes, adding additional sugars and acid. The entire blend underwent malolactic aging in neutral barrels and was bottled unfiltered.
About Lightwell Survey
About Lightwell Survey
Lightwell Survey is shining new light on Virginian winemaking. Their small batches of lively reds, dense whites and unique combinations of the two come with no preconceived descriptions or traditional aspirations. They aim for a bullseye yet prefer to land slightly off center. Started in the fall of 2015 with their first harvest in partnership with Early Mountain Vineyards in Madison, VA, their wines will continue to delve into traditional and not so familiar territory.
