The "Ballad of Chardonel and Vinifera" showcases hybrid Virginian viticulture. Chardonel is a Cornell-developed hybrid with Chardonnay parentage. It ripens consistently, with plenty of acid and an affinity for malolactic fermentation. The end result is both textural and fresh, with moderate alcohol and a rich mouthfeel. Virginian wineries are embracing Chardonel as a more ecological alternative to Chardonnay, with lower chemical spray requirements and a hardier constitution.
