The 2021 "Matilde" vintage takes its name from the medieval countess Matilde of Canossa (sometimes called Matilde of Tuscany). The countess played a key role in the Investiture Controversy of the 11th & 12th centuries, during which there was deep contention between the papacy and the empire regarding the investing of bishops into office.
She also reclaimed lands around San Benedetto Po from occupation, helping to reestablish the territory with grapevines. Many of these vineyards are still in production today.
The 2021 vintage is silky, bright, and playful. Strikingly aromatic, modest in tannin, and balanced in acidity, it's an excellent pairing with pizza, pasta, salami, and all manner of tomato dishes.

Azienda Agricola Bugno Martino is the passion project of winemakers Giuseppe and Raffaella. About fifeteen years ago, they quite their jobs together and set out for a life in wine. They planted their own vineyards, quickly going fully organic, with one goal in mind: producing a different type of Mantuan Lambrusco. A genre much maligned (mostly by low quality wine shipped to America), they made it their mission to revive its full glory. Giuseppe and Raffaella's work begins in the field. They're vineyards are rooted in biodiversity and sustainability. No chemical products are ever used, with the fields instead worked through biodynamic methods. In the cellar, native yeast predominates, with no filtration on their traditional method sparkling bottlings. In their words "Lambrusco is the wine of joy." Their vintages prove it.
