Agrina Portuguiser 2019

Agrina specializes in village wines; that’s to say, unpretentious, easy-to-drink, food-friendly wines that are meant to be served fresh and drunk in no small quantity. Their Portugieser takes its name from the unsung Portugieser varietal (often called Blauer Portugieser in Austria and Germany).  Though the name suggests Portuguese origins, there is no known evidence substantiating the claim.  It is found primarily in the Rheinhessen, Pfalz and wine regions of Lower Austria and Slovenia. 

While technically classified as a table grape, Portugieser offers a lighter-bodied, easy-drinking wine.  Currently, wine made from table grapes cannot be sold in the European Union, but here in the U.S., we can happily enjoy what Agrina has to offer. 

Agrina's Portugieser is comparable to Cru Beaujolais in style, showing plenty of dark berry and fruit flavors, with soft tannin and moderate acidity.
