Nelis Pears are native to Belgian heirloom dating back to the 1800s. When ripe, they become deeply aromatic and sugary sweet, with a meltingly yielding texture. While tolerant to many of our climatic challenges here in the Mid-Atlantic, they are seldom grown in high production operations. Their fragile skin makes them difficult to store. One often finds Nelis Pears tucked into farmer's market stands or, on occasion, in local CSA shares.
